FEBRUARY
NEWSLETTER
2012
Here we go into the New Year -----
with the slate clean, we started out by helping out at the Wounded Warriors
Banquet on January 12th.
H.E.A.R.T.S. Veterans Museum Volunteers helped in every aspect of what
was needed to hold a successful event.
The best Wounded Warrior Banquet
to date. Jimmy Wood
and Tom Fordyce put on a
great show.
It’s been two years (2 years) since we opened the
doors to the New Museum and three years (3 years) since the doors were opened
to the Veterans Conference Center / Walker County Storm Shelter and things are
progressing well. The Veterans Museum
has been blessed to have long time Board Members, from different walks of life,
committed to a class act museum. They
are: John Airola, Reva Bishop, Charlotte
Oleinik, Bette Nelson, Tommy Davis, Jerry Nemec, M. B. Etheredge, Norman Ward,
Tom Oleinik, Bob Massey, Champe Miller, Walt Pinegar, Betty Higgins, Thomas
Leeper, Barney Driscoll, and Richie Harris.
Our welcome goes out to a New Volunteer, retired
Veteran M. R. (Doc) Poth, who occasionally would visit the museum in the mall
and finally decided to come on board. He
is learning the ropes from several of our pros – like George, Dan, Allen and
Bob.
Obituaries:
Larry McDugle, Patrick Nolan, Robert J. (Ricky) Rouse and Charter Member
Juanita Lynch have died but will Not Be Forgotten.
Sam Houston, 1793
to 1863, (Birthday March 2nd) a 19th century American Statesman born in the
Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, a key figure in Texas Politics and a
Soldier. He was elected as the 1st
and 3rd President of the Republic of Texas, a U. S. Senator for
Texas after it joined the United States and finally as a Governor of our state.
The U.S.S. Sam Houston (SSBN-609) U.S. Navy
ballistic missile Submarine named for Sam Houston, President of the
Republic of Texas, was launched in 1961 and decommissioned in 1991.
VIETNAM WAR MEMORIAL WALKWAY
Thanks
to all who have bought the Benches for the Vietnam War Walkway and we recently
had a donor, a Vietnam Veteran, who has sponsored materials for the project.
DRIVERS LICENSE
You can now get the designation “Veteran” on the
face of any class or type of Texas driver’s license, establishing proof of your
Military Service. Your discharge must be
Honorable from the branch you served.
You must present a DD- 214 or DD- 215 when applying.
VOTING NEWS
Very important for seniors and disabled: You must vote in May to keep the “Homestead
Tax Cap for 65 and over”, even if you are not 65 yet. If you are a home owner, this is important to
you, if not, it is important to your friends, pass it on.
Thank
you for your service to this great Nation.
See you next month!
I remain your President,
Richie
Harris

Q. What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
A. PTSD may occur with
some individuals following psychologically traumatic events that are generally
outside the range of Normal Human Experiences. These
events may be man-made (i.e. war, plane crash, rape) or natural (i.e. floods,
hurricanes, etc) and could easily trigger symptoms of PTSD. (Brochure available at HEARTS museum.)
